Cognition Land and Water has become the first specialist contamination remediation contractor to sign the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) Sustainability Charter, reinforcing its leadership in sustainable practice within the environmental sector.
The AGS Sustainability Charter, launched to support the geotechnical and geoenvironmental industries in embedding sustainability into their operations, offers a flexible framework aligned with ISO 53001 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It encourages organisations to make meaningful, tailored commitments across seven key areas, including carbon resilience, resource efficiency, biodiversity and community engagement.
Cognition’s signing of the Charter reflects its deep alignment with these principles and builds on its status as a Certified Carbon Neutral Company. In terms of Charter commitments, Cognition is particularly focused on:
These focus areas are central to Cognition’s operations and long-term environmental goals.
Notably, Andy O’Dea, Cognition’s Technical Director, was a founding member of the AGS Sustainability Working Group and played a key role in the development of the Charter. His involvement highlights Cognition’s proactive approach to shaping industry standards and promoting sustainability across the sector.
“We’re proud to be the first in our field to sign the Charter,” said Andy O’Dea. “It’s a testament to our commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving resource efficiency, and leading by example. The Charter provides a practical and inclusive framework for companies to make real progress, regardless of size or operational complexity.”
By joining the Charter, Cognition gains access to a collaborative network of organisations committed to sustainability, along with tools to measure progress and share best practice. The move further strengthens Cognition’s reputation as a forward-thinking contractor dedicated to environmental responsibility and innovation.
