Cognition is a Tier 2 multidisciplinary contractor equipped for it all, from routine works to major infrastructure projects. We deliver innovative, sustainable solutions across the full project lifecycle — from early contractor involvement (ECI) and planning through to delivery. We can solve all civil engineering and remediation problems, helping unlock sites and drive regeneration for our clients.
The vast range of projects we can deliver extends to archaeologically sensitive land, on or adjacent to listed monuments and buildings. They require extensive liaison with regulatory bodies such as local planning authorities, English Heritage, and the Canal and River Trust (to name a few). Cognition has an enviable track record of successfully negotiating approval of permit and licence applications with regulators, local authorities and other regulators. A significant proportion of our senior management have specialist skills and backgrounds that lend themselves to successful regulator negotiation.
The following are examples of some of the heritage works we have successfully carried out on past projects:
1. ROYAL WHARF - Relocation of Listed Monument
Cognition played a crucial role in the Royal Wharf Project for client Oxley Holdings, spanning seven years and six phases of this ambitious development. The project aimed to create one of the largest mixed-use residential and commercial developments in the UK, covering 40 acres. Cognition's responsibilities included the remediation of heavily contaminated land, which also encompassed the successful relocation of a listed monument. The team coordinated with Heritage England throughout the project ensuring no damage to the historical monument upon relocation.
2. SILVERTOWN - Brunner Mond Memorial
The listed monument consists of a stone pillar featuring four sides adorned with laurel wreath carvings. It serves as a tribute to the workers of Brunner Mond's Silvertown factory who lost their lives in both World Wars and commemorates the 16 employees who lost their lives in the Silvertown TNT factory explosion in January 1917. To facilitate development at Royal Wharf (formerly Minoco Wharf), E16, the Silvertown War Memorial required relocation. Working alongside specialist stonemasons, the site team carefully dismantled the pillar and reconstructed it on a newly constructed foundation elsewhere on the site. Cognition was responsible for the cutting and subsequent restoration at the new location.
3. BOW COMMON GAS WORKS - Brickwork Restoration and Hard landscaping
At the Bow Common Gas Works site, Cognition supported the restoration of the Grade II listed former South Grove School. Our team facilitated the successful restoration of the building, which included the preservation of the 18th-century cobbled pathway.
4. BLACKWALL YARD DOCK GATE RESTORATION - Brickwork & Dock Gate Restoration
Our Blackwall Yard project involved restoring a section of river wall located opposite the O2 Arena in London. This included the replacement of historic brickwork and repointing, the refurbishment of timber weirs, and the preservation of the 18th-century dock gate.
